Fictional Novel - Free Essay Example

The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, is a fictional novel that consists of sixteen-intertwined stories about the conflict between four Chinese immigrant mothers, and their four Chinese American-born daughters. Published in 1989, this book takes place in San Francisco, California, and parts of China. In Between An interesting note about the book is how it does not follow chronological order. It is broken into four different sections. The story starts off with Jing-mei June Woo, daughter of Suyuan Woo who has just recently passed away, and then tells the mothers stories. The second section jumps more to the present and talks about the daughters lives. It continues like that, until the fourth and final section where it goes back to the mothers narratives. The novel is based upon mostly the story of a mother named Suyuan Woo and her daughter Jing-mei June Woo, and how Jing-mei travels back to China to meet her half sisters, Chwun Yu and Chwun Hwa. The reason her half-sister are still in China was due to the Japanese invasion of Kweilin during World War II, and her mothers sacrifice of leaving them on a roadside to flee to safety. Years later, Jing-mei is born in America to a different father. However, she intended to return to China, but sadly dies before she gets the chance to find them. Jing-mei is now taking her mothers spot in mahjong at the weekly gathering her mother had created back in China, and was brought to San Francisco when she moved to the United States. The weekly gathering included Suyuans other friends and members-Lindo Jong, An-mei Hsu, and Ying Ying St. Clair. Just before Suyuan had died, she had been able to track down her other daughters. So the women give Jing-mei money to go and find them and tell them about their mothers life. The middle part of the book is about the daughters- Waverly Jong, Rose Hsu Jordan, Lena St. Clair, and of course Jing-mei Woo, making connections of their childhood relationships with their mothers, and talking about their relationship with their mothers, and the struggles they are going through. The last section of the book goes back to the Chinese mothers perspective, and their attempt to appease the divide between Chinese and American cultures by coming up with solutions that can solve both types of values and wants. Thesis Statement: This book does not just tell the stories of eight women, but rather the more complex relationship and misunderstandings that results in a division between Chinese born mothers and their American born daughters.

College Tour Questions

College Tour Questions March 15, 2013 There are some college tour questions that are totally inappropriate to ask. Theres a good post by Martha C. Merrill, the dean of admission and financial aid at Connecticut College, up on The Choice blog on the topic of appropriate college tour questions. In the post entitled, What (Not) to Ask on a Campus Tour, Merrill goes through some questions that prospective applicants and their parents sometimes rather astonishingly ask. Wondering what those questions are? Have you ever been on a campus tour when a parent in the group asked how much it would cost to buy a library? Oh, it happens. Ms. Merrill didnt mention this particular gem, but she did mention a few others that got us to giggle. For instance, students should not ask their tour guide to admit them. That tour guide has no power over your candidacy. He or she is just a student in all likelihood. Maybe at some schools its an admissions officer so there are indeed exceptions, but this is neither the time or the place to bring such a question up. In fact, there is never a time or place to outright ask an admissions officer to admit you. Thats absurd. Oy vey. Merrill also says that students and parents shouldnt ask the tour guide to predict how much financial aid you might receive. Yes, some folks really do this! How the heck would the tour guide know this information? Oy vey again. And certainly dont ask your tour guides grades or SAT scores, writes Merrill. Oh, weve heard people ask this. Are they kidding? How nosy can one be? What business is it of theirs? What an invasive question but, yes, there are people in the world on college tours who ask such questions. It happens. Have you been on a tour where an inappropriate question was asked? If so, how did your tour guide respond? Share with us your stories by posting below! While youre here, check out our video on What Not to Do on College Tours.

Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was born on Sunday, February 12, 1809. His parents were Tom and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. When he was seven, he and his family moved to southern Indiana. His mother had died recently of a disease and his father eventually remarried. While growing up, his nature was that of someone who wanted to learn and read rather than help with the farm. Now while Lincoln was against slavery, he was not against abolitionist rights. Later on, it was he and not William Seward, who became the Republican presidential candidate, along with his running mate, Hannibal Hammlin. He defeated three other candidates to get to the presidency: Stephen Douglas, John Bell and John Breckinridge. This is when trouble in the United States started to form, because there were a few states that were less united then others. Fearing Republican control in the government, many southern states decide to secede from the Union. Until that time, no other president had to face this kind of domestic trouble. Being in firm control and taking the entire country through a bloody civil war is surely one of the many reasons he is remembered as one of our greatest presidents ever. Essay about Christopher Columbus The Villain - 498 Words

Christopher Columbus All my life, I have been hearing about Christopher Columbus. Since little, first, my family talking about him, then in school learning about him. I really thought he was a hero. The way they teach you about him in grammar school or middle school makes you think he really is a hero. But later on, doing research on him, looking for what he really did, where did he came from etc. I realize that he is not a hero. There are many reasons why people think he is good as well there are many reasons why they think he is bad. Personally I think Columbus is a villain, he did a lot of bad things that most people don’t know a bout. However if they know them, it would make them think a little bit deeper if Columbus is the Hero†¦show more content†¦Christopher Columbus did not do a single good action in any of his four voyages in the late 1400s. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not discover it, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land. It was just luck that he discovered the Americas, because he wasn’t even coming here, he got here because his ships went the wrong way and â€Å"Oh Surprise!† â€Å"We got something here to bring to Spain† When Christopher Columbus landed in the Caribbean, Native Americans were scared, but still friendly toward him. So he took advantage of this people being nice to him, to force them to convert in his religion and also take them as slaves. Columbus also saw that this people had no weapons, they have no way to defend themselves. So as you can see it was very easy for Columbus to take them over and treat them badly because they had no protection. That is a good example to show how cruel Columbus could act toward this people that could not fight back. Also Columbus took this poor people as slaves. He made them adore his God. Also made them worked for him without any payment, maybe just for some food. He took some of them with him to Spain to show the kings what he had done, while the others were digging gold, making money for Columbus, his people and his country. Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban Essay Example For Students

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban Essay Harry Potter and the Prisoner of AzkabanHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is the third book in the trilogy of J. K. Rowlings other Harry Potter books, though she is coming out with four more books in the coming years. Just to quickly run through the two previous books; Harry Potter is a wizard, whos parents were killed by the worst dark wizard ever known. The reason why Harry Potter is still around, is because Lord Voldemort failed to kill Harry. His spell hit Harry, but then backfired on Voldemort taking all of his powers with him. Harry is so famous for two things. Withstanding the powers of Lord Voldemort, and, taking him back in to the underworld in hiding. In the first book, Harry receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hes eventually allowed to go, and spends the next six months there learning magic, getting into trouble, and trying to solve mysteries of his past, and the school. In the second book, Harry goes back to his second year at Hogwarts, and gets into more trouble, figures out many astonishing mysteries and learns loads more magic. His best friends in the two books consist of Ron and Hermione (two of his fellow wizard students) and Hagrid the gamekeeper who was expelled from Hogwarts but allowed a job as the gamekeeper. Now to get to the Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry Potter is back for the summer at the Dursleys home. The Dursleys are his mothers sister, and that family detests Harry in every way possible. They keep him locked up in a cupboard in the basement, take his owl (used for delivering mail etc.) his wand, and his trunk of spell books and everything else he could use to do any bit of magic. Harrys birthday again passes without being noticed by the Dursleys, but Harry receives presents from Ron and Hermione and also Hagrid. Over the summer the entire town was in shock for one afternoon when 13 people were harshly murdered by a man known only as Sirius Black, whom no one had seen before. The pursuit of Serious continues for a long time and doesnt end too soon. Harry counts as the days pass by, waiting for the day when he travels out to catch the train 9 3/4, the train to Hogwarts hidden between trains 9 and 10. There is a big problem now, though. Aunt Marge was coming over to visit, and this meant big trouble if Harry did anything wrong. When the family was gathered around the table to eat dinner that night, Aunt Marge was criticizing Harry for the entire time, how he looked bad in glasses, how his hair looked like crap and how he was a bad apple from when he was born and to top it off, how he shouldnt have been born from his crappy parents. Harry couldnt take it any more. He hauled off and yelled a stream of magic which sent aunt Marge into the air inflating like a balloon. At this Harry ran downstairs and grabbed Hedwig (his owl) and all of his other Magical things and ran out the door into the cold, dark streets. Harry knew that he was probably going to be expelled from Hogwarts for magic out side of school grounds is prohibited and he had been warned once before. He ran through the streets scared like never before what would happen to him if he got expelled and had to return to the Dursleys. Later in the streets as Harry walked by there was a sudden large BANG and out of nowhere a big bus was sitting on the ground next to him. Harry walked in and found out that this was the night bus for stranded witches and wizards like him, and Harry could go anywhere he wanted for 10 shillings. Desert Tortoises Essay Days later Hagrids Hyppogrif was decapitated. Later that night Sirius Black was caught coming out of the secret passage of the Whomping Willow and was taken up to stay in Hogwarts so the Dementors could perform the Kiss of Death; A Dementor takes off its hood and kisses the victim, sucking the life and happy memories out of it, worse than death. Professor Dumbledore (the head of Hogwarts) knew it was the wrong choice to kill the Hyppogrif and wanted to take action on it. She gave to Hermione a while back a time capsule that lets her go back in time so she could get extra classes finished in half the time. She was only to use it for school, but this was serious. They were to turn back the time by 2 hours and unleash the Hyppogrif and it would fly up and save serious from the Dementors. There was obviously something else that Dumbleodre knew there. The mass murderer was not Sirius Black, it was the now known traitor, Peter Pettigrew. The plan worked out and Buckbeak the Hyppogrif and Sirius Black flew away into the night. The Dementors didnt know this and were very mad with rage and hundreds of them were flowing on to the field where Harry and his friends stood. Earlier in the term, Professer Lupin taught Harry the spell that made the Dementors leave, a patronous. Harry in his state was so happy and spellbound of the previous episode he felt he could cast the best patronous ever. Expecto-Patronum!!!! out of Harrys wand galloped a horse with a rider, Padfoot. The Dementors fled in all directions and Harry succeeded. Peter Pettigrew (Scabbers) was found out by everyone and was relieved of his transforming powers and told to run away and threatened to be killed, but Harry felt opposite so Peter was gone and never to be seen again. On the Hogwarts Express home that year, an Owl flew in the window and dropped a package on Harrys lap. Harry opened it and it was a letter from his God Father, Sirius Black. Dear Harry, I hope this finds you before you reach your aunt and uncle. I dont whether theyre used to owl post. Buckbeak and I are hiding. I wont tell you where, in case this falls into the wrong hands. I have some doubt about the owls reliability, but he is the best I could find and he did seem eager for the job. I believe the Dementors are still searching for me, but they havent a hope of finding me here. I am planning to allow some Muggles to glimpse me soon, a long way from Hogwarts, so that the security on the castle will be lifted. There is something I never got around to telling you during our brief meeting. It was I who sent you the Firebolt. The letter goes on and Black gives Ron his Owl because of Scabbers and Explains that the Firebolt was a present from him for his previous thirteen birthdays on which he missed. I would give this book, the third J. K. Rowling book a definite 110%. There was no parts in the book where I got bored or skipped and it was another one of those rare books that get me hooked and I can never put them down until I read 50-100 pages at a time. I certainly recommend J. K. Rowlings novels to all readers for a fantastic read. Joanne K. Rowling is by far my favorite author ever and I cant wait until she comes out with the next four sequels to Harry Potter.

The current version ( IPv4 ) of Internet Protocol was sufficient for 20 old ages, but if Internet will go on to turn, reasonably shortly we will run out of references for all connexions because IPv4 can manage merely 32 spot references ( which are 1000000s of connexions ) . This is the major drawback of IPv4. The other issues is that IPv4 was non designed to manage existent clip applications such as picture and sound expeditiously and IPv4 can make a batch of atomization due to the deficiency of ability to foretell or observe the constrictions in the package # 8217 ; s way. The datagram in IPv6 consists of Base Header, Optional Extension Headers, and the Data Area. The other advantage of IPv6 over IPv4 is the better informations security. This is achieved by adding two optional extensions # 8220 ; Authentication Header # 8221 ; provide hallmark and unity to IPv6 datagrams. The 2nd security extension heading provided with IPng is the # 8220 ; IPng Encapsulating Security Header # 8221 ; this mechanism provides unity and confidentiality to IPv6 datagrams. Both extension headings are flexible and algorithm independent, this provides flexibleness and catholicity to them.

The History Of The American Mafia Essays - Organized Crime

The History of the American Mafia Throughout history, crime has existed in many different forms and has been committed by not only individuals, but by groups as well. Crime is something that knows no boundries; it exists in all cultures, is committed by all races, and has existed in all time periods. Crime exists as a part of the economic institution and is a lifestyle for many people. Crime also exists in both organized and un organized forms. Since the early 1900's, "organized" crime has existed in the United States. The following will show where, when, and why the mafia came to the United States, who organized it in the United States, and how it differed from its origins in the European mafia. In the ninth century, Sicily was occupied by Arab forces. The native Sicilians were oppressed and took refuge in the surrounding hills. The Sicilians formed a secret society to unite the natives against the Arab and Norman invaders. This secret society was called Mafia after the Arabic word for refuge. The society's intentions were to create a sense of family based on ancestry and Sicilian heritage. In the 1700's, pictures of a black hand were distributed to the wealthy. This was an unspoken request for an amount of money in return for protection. If the money wasn't paid, the recipients could expect violence such as kidnappings, bombings, and murder. By the nineteenth century, this society grew larger and more criminally oriented. In 1876, Mafia Don Rafael Palizzolo, ran for political office in Sicily. He forced the voters to vote for him under gunpoint. After being elected into office, he promoted Mafia Don Crispi as Prime Minister. Together the two put Sicily under government cont rol and funnelled government funds to the society known as the Mafia. In the 1800's, New Orleans was the largest Mafia site in the United States. It was while investigating the murder of an Italian immigrant that the current Police Chief, David Hennessey discovered the existence of this secret society. Police Chief Hennessey was assassinated before this murder case could go to trial. Twelve men were charged with this assassination but were lynched by a newly formed vigilante group. The Italian Ambassador demanded that the vigilantes be tried. President Harrison who disproved of the vigilantes and gave a large cash settlement to the families of the lynched men. This was a widely publicized case because of its' foreign ramifications and the involvement of the President of the United States. Don Vito, Vito Cascio Ferro, was the first Sicilian Capo de Tutti Capi. He fled to the United States in 1901 to escape arrest and formed a group of the Black Hand. Its' members were hardened criminals currently fugitives from Sicily. He is known as the Father of the A merican Mafia. In 1924, Mussolini was determined to rid Italy of the Mafia so many members fled to the United States to avoid persecution . This increased the numbers of members in the organization. These fleeing Italians were well aware there was money to be made in the United States through extortion, prostitution, gambling and bootlegging. Every large city soon had its own Mafia chapter. Prohibition which was a legal ban on the manufacturer and sale of intoxicating drinks generated a wave of illegal activity since there was big money to be made. During this time, gangsters openly flaunted their wealth and power. This period established many young men as leaders in the New Age American Mafia. Charles Luciano, born in 1897 in Sicily, came to New York in 1906. He trained in the Five Points Gang, a Mafia crew, under John Torrio. In this gang, he became friends with Al Capone and other prominent gangsters. Luciano started his own prostitution racket in the early 1920's and was in total control of prostitution in Manhattan by 1925. In 1929 he was kidnapped, beaten and stabbed severally with an icepick. He miraculously survived but maintained "omerta", which is a vow never to reveal any Mafia secrets or members under penalty of death or torture. By 1935, Luciano was known as The Boss of Bosses. Why Health Costs Need to Be Contained Professor Ramos Blog

Why Health Costs Need to Be Contained Have you ever thought how hard it must be for families and relatives of severely sick people that die from a deadly disease? Maybe they wonder everyday if there could have been one simple solution that could have kept them alive for a lot longer? Every year thousands of Americans are diagnosed with a deadly disease. The government should provide equal health insurance for poor and rich people. If Americans could afford better health insurance it would prevent many deadly diseases from arising because doctors could diagnose them and possibly find a cure sooner rather than too late. A huge problem that is happening today is more and more people everyday are dying from diseases and are still in poverty because of the cost of health care. They use what they have left from bills and food for health coverage and with that causing them to stay in poverty because they can not afford many necessities like schooling and transportation. If we had equal health insurance for both rich and poor the death toll would decrease drastically. Lower income individuals should not be kept from getting the medical treatment needed to prevent the sickness from spreading or even worse death. The study, conducted at Harvard Medical School and Cambridge Health Alliance, found that â€Å"Uninsured, working-age Americans have a 40 percent higher risk of death than their privately insured counterparts, up from a 25 percent excess death rate found in 1993.† Meaning that people that are not insured have greater risk of dying from an illness. â€Å"The uninsured have a higher risk of death when compared to the privately insured, even after taking into account socioeconomic, health behaviors, and baseline health,† said lead author Andrew Wilper, M.D., who currently teaches at the University of Washington School of Medicine.(David Cecere). If the government provided affordable health care for both poor and rich there wouldnt be as much sickness and death. Certain types of cancer spread at certain speeds and are treated in different manners. If poor people had access to the same health care as the rich people did, it would be easier to find the cure to these types of diseases. â€Å"We doctors have many new ways to prevent deaths from hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease - but only if patients can get into our offices and afford their medications.†(Andrew Wilper M.D). Now days good health insurance is increasing in price, which induces the lower class people to find out ways to get the same health coverage and that sometimes it is through crime or stolen identity. With the drop of the price of health insurance it would give the people something to look forward to instead of stealing identity and crime against other people through stealing medicine and medical supplies. Health debt that was collected in 2013 was higher than student loans which would in term make it harder for the lower class to get in school to better themselves and also be able to afford health insurance so it turn they would have a hard time paying off all of their debt. With all of that debt how would you be able to ever get out of debt you may ask? If health care was lowered they would be able to afford every other thing which would lead them to a successful life. With them being successful more money would go to the government.(Holly Fletcher). We all want the best for us and our loved ones and we want the best care we get sick but the more money Americans spend on healthcare, the more we harm our country by spending so much on it. According to the OECD Health Statistics (2013) The United States is public health insurance expenses match a lot over other countries; It is our private health insurance that surpass the expenses of all.(Vox). Forcing people to pay for insurance is not the solution. According to The Washington Post Magazine, there are few genuine solutions to our health-care problems only changes that are less bad than the alternatives. Writing in the liberal Washington Monthly magazine, Paul Hewitt and Phillip Longman suggested that Congress should adopt the Medicare fee and reimbursement system for the entire country.(Robert J. Samuelson). They believe that if this were to be done the employer-paid premiums would drop drastically allowing the money save from that to be used to pay for the new and improved more affordable services that would help those in need. â€Å"We need to slow medical spending and relax the pressures on wages and other government programs. The recognition of the huge gap between Medicare and private reimbursement rates creates the opportunity to do that†.(Robert J. Samuelson). If we continue to work together as a country to solve this severe healthcare issue, We can achieve great progress in our nation that will lead to better possibilities and new improvement in the medical field. Everyday Nurses and Doctors are saving the lives of many humans, we all need these heroes to ensure the future of our people. That is why it is important that the government makes it a priority that all Americans should equally share a improve health system that is affordable and accessible to all. Marketing Plan - pricing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Marketing Plan - pricing - Essay Example The article overall was a good read, and provided much insight into the paths and steps a company should take when trying to price their item, and how they should expect each different scenario to play out for them depending on their pricing actions. 2. The item I have chosen is the Nintendo Wii video game console. While it did not create a market in of itself, its blue ocean strategy has changed the video game market currently, if not forever. The first two years of its life it was most certainly in the Markey introduction stage, with Nintendo using all sorts of press and a hand on approach to try to get as many people as possible to try out and believe in their new product. Now however it seems to be in the growth stage, with sales numbers skyrocketing unlike anything a video game console has ever seen before. Product is still hard to find in many markets, and public awareness is huge with all the publicity and good press the system has been getting as of late. I believe Nintendo now needs to prepare for it to continue into its mature stage, and be ready to cut costs or make any other marketing plans for the future of its success video game system.

Research paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Research paper - Essay Example Children can steal for a variety of reasons like poverty, lack of parental guidance, and bad family culture. For a child that steals, there are certain roles and responsibilities of the parents and teachers. With mutual effort, parents and teachers can guide the child’s behavior so that they do not steal. It is important to differentiate between children and adults when punishment is being decided for the crime of stealing. â€Å"Your child is probably not evil or destined for life in prison† (familyeducation, 2012). Children need to be dealt with much more carefully and strategically because they have a lot of room for improvement. Reasons why children steal Children can steal for different reasons that may include but are not limited to poverty, lack of guidance, and culture. Poverty Poverty is the biggest cause of stealing among children. Children steal something when they do not get it granted to them by legitimate means. The legitimate means for a child are parents or the caregivers. Parents generally do try their best to provide everything for their children but sometimes they cannot because of which children are tempted to steal. Lack of guidance Many children lack parental guidance. Every day, so many babies are born to unmarried mothers in their teenage. As single parent, the mother cannot spend enough time with the child because she has to take care of her studies and work. The child remains alone most of the day. Even the grandparents cannot look after the child the way a parent does. â€Å"School-age kids usually know they're not supposed to take something without paying, but they might do so anyway because they lack enough self-control† (KidsHealth, 2012). The child attempts to steal. When nobody forbids, it becomes child’s habit. Family culture Every family has its own culture. In certain families, stealing is not discouraged because the parents themselves are thieves and criminals. They inculcate the same values in the ir children. In such cases, children adopt the habit of stealing from the parents. Miscellaneous reasons According to the Hudson Valley Parent Magazine (2012), children steal either to address a need like lack of attention, affection, or love from parents or because they have gained approval for stealing directly or indirectly or the children want to attack the parents by causing them embarrassment with their behavior. Guiding children’s behavior Parents’ role It is fundamentally the parents’ duty to guide their children towards the right path. Parents that find that their child steals should first teach the child with patience and love not to steal. Parents should tell what the consequences of stealing are and why it is considered a sin in the religion and a crime in the law. Most probably, the child would not steal again. If the child does, next time the parents should beat and scold the child for this and again forbid him/her to steal. Most children would def initely stop stealing. Still if a child steals, parents should refer the case to a psychologist or police. Teachers’ role Teachers also assume very important roles in guiding the children towards the right path. Since children remain with them for a considerable portion of the day at school, teachers get to learn the psychology of each child and can thus know
